When did someone you respect engage in leadership?
Some of the greatest leaders I’ve worked with have been conductors, and it has almost always been when they have allowed their passion and emotion to show through in their teaching. I am reminded of Mallory Thompson, who taught me the joy of Nimrod from the Enigma Variations one summer during music camp. Weston Noble, who regularly exclaimed “Forgive me Lord, for I am coveting!” in reference to phrases of music that he found beautiful. When did you choose to lead? A simple time I chose to lead was when I was out with the Goldwater Marching Band waiting to take the field for halftime, and I looked up at the moon. It seemed so pure that night, and I told the band “Look at the moon! It’s magic!”. I was vulnerable, and was showing appreciation for the beauty of the world, and I believe that many of my students began to see the beauty of the world that night. Is leadership a choice? Leadership is absolutely a choice. It can be difficult to be vulnerable and to open yourself up, not only to your own ideas, but to the ideas of others. What is the change I am trying to make? I am trying to help people become more observant of the beauty of the realities around them, and to have a greater appreciation for life in general. That includes helping them to make choices that improve their own quality of life, but also to teach them how to have a greater appreciation for specific experiences, such as nature, music, art, literature, food, and relationships.
